Features and Benefits

While the American Government: Roots and Reform remains true to its historical approach and emphasis on currency, the overall content of the book is streamlined and shortened for greater readability and ease of comprehension.

This edition includes examples, figures, and tables that draw on experiences in American government in the here and makes them relevant to students’ lives. At the same time, the book’s historical approach is strengthened with opening vignettes and key examples. A better understanding of how American government developed over time is a critical dimension that makes the content interesting to students.

The new 14th edition includes 2020 presidential election results and decisions from the 2019–2020 term of the Supreme Court. Many of the chapters open with new historical vignettes, and a new feature, Critical Thinking, provides a contextual window for political systems and allow students to explore diverse political perspectives on these big-picture questions. New Journal prompts require students to think critically about politics today in context of a worldwide pandemic and widespread actions against racial injustice.
