Introductory Chemistry Key Features

  • Hallmark Features Support Student Learning
  • Testing Student Knowledge

Hallmark Features Support Student Learning

  • Worked Examples
2- & 3-column worked examples break down problem-solving steps. The 1st column outlines the procedure for reaching a solution and the reasoning behind each step. The 2nd and 3rd columns show how to implement the steps with examples.
  • Solution Map
A Solution Map is available to provide students a visual aid that helps them navigate problems.
  • For More Practice
For More Practice in each worked Example directs students to opportunities to practice skills from the Example.
  • Multipart Images
Multipart images depicted through Macroscopic, Microscopic and Symbolic perspectives help students better visualize and understand chemistry.
  • Molecular-Level Views
Molecular-level views reveal connections between everyday processes and the activities of atoms and molecules.

Testing Student Knowledge

  • Predict This! Feature
Predict This! asks students to guess the outcome of a topic they are about to read.Afterwards, a Predict Follow-Up confirms whether their prediction was correct or not and why.
  • Self-Assessment Quizzes
Self-Assessment Quizzes help students check their understanding of the material in the chapter and better prepare for exams. Quizzes are located at the end of each chapter.
  • End-of-Chapter Questions
End-of-Chapter questions have been added throughout the book, and numerous End-of-Chapter questions have been revised. Many new End-of-Chapter questions involve the interpretation of graphs and data.

More About Introductory Chemistry

  • Nivaldo J. Tro Author Bio

Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990. He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum.

He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution. Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.

Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.
