  • UPDATED - Real data—In the 14th Edition, the vast majority of exercises, examples, and Chapter Problems are based on real data to make the course as relevant as possible. For instance, 93% of the exercises use real data, showing students that statistics truly are all around us, and 64% of exercises are new to the 14th edition, keeping the problems current.

  • REVISED - 46 data sets, available in Appendix B and the MyMathLab for School, are referenced throughout the exercise sets, marked with a data set icon. Using these data sets help students gain statistical literacy and teach them to apply the same methodology and thought processes used by professional statisticians.

    • Expanded data sets in Appendix B have increased from 32 to 46 total, with 20 new to the14th Edition—including Internet Traffic, Disney World Wait Times, Car Data, Commute Times, Candies, and Taxi Data. 

    • Larger data sets include data sets with 6068, 3982, 5755, 8959, and 1000 cases, as well as big data sets with 465,506 cases and 31,784 cases. Working with such larger data sets is essential to students progressing into the age of big data and data science. 

  • NEW - Big (or Very Large) Data Projects are located near the end of each chapter. 

  • UPDATED - A Chapter Problem opens each chapter, using real data to motivate students about the concepts they’re about to learn. Chapter Problems are revisited within the chapter. All Chapter Problems have been replaced with new problems in the 14th Edition.

    • NEW - Chapter Problem icons (marked with a CP) indicate examples that relate to the Chapter Problem, demonstrating how different statistical concepts and procedures can be applied to the real-world issue highlighted in the Chapter. 

  • REVISED - Margin Essays—134 margin essays highlight real-world topics and foster student interest. 36 are new to this edition. Also, many Go Figure items briefly describe interesting numbers or statistics.

  • Readability is paramount in this text. Great care is taken to ensure that all students can find the text readable and applicable.

  • Chapter Objectives summarize key learning goals for each section in the chapter.

Content changes 

  • The prior edition introduced the resampling method of bootstrapping in Section 7-4. The revision now includes additional methods of resampling using bootstrapping and randomization.

  • New Resampling Methods: Resampling methods are new to Sections 8-2, 8-3, 8-4, 8-5, 9-5, and 10-1.

  • New Subsection 10-1, Part 3: Randomization Test for Correlation 

  • New Chapter 15: Holistic Statistics 

  • Removed content for Section 6-6 (Normal as Approximation to Binomial) from the text; now available for download in MyLab Statistics or pearson.com/math-stats-resources.

  • Removed section on Ethics in Statistics from Chapter 15 to Section 1-4, and is available for download in MyLab Statistics or pearson.com/math-stats-resources. 


Technology changes 

  • Statdisk is updated to include new methods of resampling using bootstrapping and randomization. It also is now available as Statdisk Online, a web-based version.

  • New technology:

    • Rand Google Sheets are included as an additional technology in the end-of-section Tech Centers where appropriate.

    • The technologies of Statdisk, Excel, StatCrunch, Minitab, and TI-83>84 Plus calculators continue to be included in the Tech Centers.
