SIOP Activity

The dual goal of the SIOP Model is to develop students' content knowledge and academic language at the same time.

Word Generation is an activity that teaches students about how words "work" in English, rather than asking them to memorize a list of words and definitions. This activity builds on students' prior knowledge of words and word parts in order to access words that may be new to them in English.

Let's hear from Dr. MaryEllen Vogt about this activity that can impact student learning in an exponential way (14 word roots provide access to 100,00 words).

Conversational and Academic Language Development

WHAT IS IT AND HOW CAN IT HELP?

The dual goal of the SIOP Model is to develop students’ content knowledge and academic language at the same time. Academic language represents the range of language used in academic settings, including elementary and secondary schools. Let’s hear from Dr. Jim Cummins about the important distinction between social/conversational language and academic language, and why educators need to know the difference.
