On-Demand Zak Champagne - Navigating the New Normal: Distance Learning K-5
It’s important to continue to build community and focus on student thinking. This opportunity will allow us all the chance to learn how to not make virtual learning just drill and practice, but to continue to engage our students as mathematicians who think, communicate, listen, share, and challenge each other as we learn together.
On-Demand Developing Mathematical Thinking Habits Through Mathematical Practices in Kindergarten Through Grade 5
In a world of technology, with lightning-fast processing and vast memory capacity, what mathematical abilities are going to prepare students to be educated, productive, and employable members of society? The answer is that students must be prepared not only with the knowledge of important mathematical concepts and skills, but also with experiences in which they learn how to think about and use that knowledge in order to investigate, evaluate, make decisions, and justify choices. Mathematical thinking habits develop over time as students consider questions that require them to analyze, justify, and revisit mathematical representations and problem-solving processes. Join author Janie Schielack as she provides us with guidelines for modeling questions that students can learn to ask themselves in order to engage in the mathematical practices that lead to long-term mathematical thinking habits.
On-Demand Author Webinar: Developing Conceptual Understanding: What, When, and How with Dr. Janet H. Caldwell
There are two ingredients for developing conceptual understanding: computational proficiency and problem-solving skills. But what is meant by this? In this webinar, we examine five instructional strategies that can help students develop conceptual understanding: Building Skills and Procedures from Concepts, Using Problem-Based Teaching, Using Multiple Representations, Focusing on Reasoning and Communication, and Helping Students Make Connections between Concepts. Within each strategy, we'll explore examples of concepts, illustrate how concepts develop over time through number concepts like place value, and we will uncover the important outcomes for teaching understanding.
