Letter Names & SoundsStudents’ ability to identify letter names and sounds are assessed in kindergarten and first grade.

BlendingStudents’ ability to blend onsets, rimes, and phonemes are assessed in kindergarten and first grade.

Word ReadingStudents’ ability to read words is first assessed at the end of kindergarten, then again in first and second grade. In third and fourth grade, word reading includes multisyllabic and irregular words. In sixth through eighth grade, word reading includes both word and phrase accuracy.

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN)In kindergarten, Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) includes objects and colors. In first through third grade, it includes letters and digitals. RAN may be assessed in grades 4 and up depending on your district settings.

Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) is first assessed at the end of kindergarten. It is assessed in first grade, and again at the beginning of second grade. NWF may be assessed in grade 3 depending on your district settings.
